On Saturday, March 14th the Confluence Center Coast Junior Basketball team earned IHSA State Runner-up distinction finishing with a 4-1 record in round robin play. Coast defeated the Peoria Wildcats soundly in the morning game and looked to be on track for a state title. The Windy City Warriors stopped Coasts’ winning streak in the championship game.

Coast played with a lot of heart in the final game, but couldn’t keep up with Windy City who had a a roster of 12 and a deep bench. Windy City came out pressing and jumped to a 16-2 lead in the first quarter. Coast could never recover, but also never gave up. Coaches Jim Dugan and Lyn Gerber are proud of their team and are already looking forward to next year.

While not placing too much emphasis on statistics, it is nice to be recognized for accomplishments. James Clark averaged over 26 points per game. Cameron Oestringer averaged over 17 ppg and Colin DeWitt averaged over 4 ppg. All three boys played some great defense and the team is looking forward to Colin playing a larger role on the offense next year. Austin Wilson is getting close to putting the ball through the hoop and learned a lot about defense in his first basketball tournament experience. Katelyn Carpunky who just turned eight also got a taste of big time basketball and in many ways was an MVP. Her willingness to participate allowed Coast to compete in this great event.

Each team member will keep the IHSA Runner-up Plaque for a couple of weeks and display it proudly at their school because they really are representing their school as a varsity athlete on the Center Coast team. The Confluence simply provides the kids with the opportunity to participate, compete and have a ton of fun.

The Confluence is the only Disabled Sports Organization (DSO) for children in Southern Illinois. We would love to see our team grow. We know there are kids out there, but we need help in finding them. If you know of a child who might like to participate, please contact us.
